Teaching Point: Simple Past Tense ( -ed forms )
Pre-assessment Activity: Some questions about the tenses such as Simple Continuous Present
Pre-entry Performance: Students have taught Past of “ be”: was & were
Performance Objectives:
A. Content:
a. Students will be able to use the verbs in Simple Past Tense.
b. Students will be know that a past verb form has no auxiliary verb in the affirmative.( e.g. He watched. I played. We studied. )
c. Students will be know that in Negative & questions forms need to use “ did” and “ didn’t”
Examples:
1. They played football at school.
N. They didn’t play football.
2. Q. Did they play football at school ?
B. Process:
a. Students will give examples, deduce rules, practice correct and justify.
b. Students work in teams, interact, cooperate and work together to solve the problems & exersises.
c. Students will complete worksheets and correct them .( in pairs )
d. Students will take a quiz or a test. ( Individually )

I. Introduction:
1. Reviewing Previous lesson quickly ( was/were ) and relating it to current lesson.
2. Presenting, explaining and modeling the skills( The students should be active and deduce the rules themselves whenever possible )
II. Transition to teams:
1. Explain how cooperative learning works and the procedures to be followed.
2. Assign each student to a team.
3. Assign the location in the room for the different teams.
4. Give the procedures for obtaining and turning in materials.
5. Give the time frames
III. Team Study and Monitoring:
1. Give each team two copies of worksheets only then two copies of the answer sheets.( So that they work in pairs. )
2. Ask team members to study worksheets and answer sheets to practice and assess their knowledge of the simple past tense.
3.Monitor the students’ work carefully
4.Focus on positive practice :( Praise the team who is working well and show others how they are doing it.
IV. Individual Testing / Quiz
1. Each student sits alone for the quiz.
2. Each student has to understand the content and demonstrate his/her understanding.
V. Quiz Correction:
Students in different teams correct each other’s quizzes after having received the quiz answer sheets.
VI. Team Recognition:
1. Distribute the “ Teams Summary Sheets” on which the Base Scores should be written in advance.
2. Get students to determine individual improvement scores according to the guidelines mentioned on the Team Summary Sheets.
3.Recognize Teams according to the guidelines mentioned on the Teams Summary Sheets as well.
4.Give the different certificates to the “Good Team”, “ Great Team” and “ Excellent Team”
VI.Closure:
Review and discuss ( briefly ) the various components of STAD.( Ask students for their opinion to see whether they have liked this method or not.
Homework: “write it down” ( pages 32-33 )

The Simple Past Tense ( source: Practical English Usage; Michael Swan )
1. Use:
We use the simple past for many kinds of past events: short, quickly finished actions and happenings, longer situations, and repeated events.
Example: I cleaned the room yesterday.
They watched TV last night.
2. Forms( regular verbs )
Affirmative Question Negative
I worked.
You worked.
He/she/it worked. etc
Did I work?
Did you work ?
Did he/she/it work ? etc
I did not work
You did not work
He/she/it did not work. etc
( contracted negatives : I didn’t work, you didn’t work etc. )
3.Pronunciation of –ed
The regular past ending –ed is pronounced as follows:
a: /d/ after vowels and voiced consonants ( except /d/ )
played combed listened cleaned
b: / t / after unvoiced consonants( except /t/ )
asked helped watched washed
c: / Id / after /d/ and / t/
needed wanted waited
4. Spelling of regular affirmative past tense forms
Most of regular verbs:
Add –ed:(work worked) (play played) (clean cleaned) (rest rested)
Verbs ending in –e:
Add – d: (close closed) (arrive arrived)
Verbs ending in one stressed vowel + one
Consonant( except w and y ):
Double the consonant and add –ed: (shop shopped)
Verbs ending in consonant + -y :
Change y to i and add –ed: (study studied)
But ( vowel + -y ): play played
