James Fenimore Cooper was one of the first great American writers. He was born in 1789, when the United States was a new, young country, and American writers usually copied the writers of the older countries of Europe. Cooper was one of the first Americans to write about American subjects- about the people and the country of the United States. Around the year 1000AD , some people from north west India began to travel west wards – nobody knows why . After leaving their homes , they didn,t have homes again, but they spent their lives moving from one place to another .
Their generations are called the Romany people , or Gypsies. There are Gypsies allover the world, and many of them are still traveling , with no fixed homes. There are about eight millions of them , including three millions in eastern Europe.
Gypsies sometimes have a hard time in the countries where they travel. Because they are different , people may be afraid of them.
